It’s a safe bet that almost anyone who has called the U.S. home will recognize the infamous Heinz slogan “57 Varieties”. It was originally developed by the company’s founder Henry J. Heinz, who started the H.J. Heinz Company in Pittsburgh in 1876. The slogan was first introduced in 1896, after Heinz saw a New York advertisement for “21 Styles of Shoes.” Although the Heinz Company already produced more than 60 products at this time, Heinz selected the slogan to convey the clear message that his company offered a wide variety of products. Legend has it that five was his own lucky number and seven was selected for its enduring significance to people of all ages.
